   ALBERTA

While the big centers of Calgary and Edmonton have roads/bridges, buildings and public transit projects shovel-ready for funding, water/wastewater projects are proposed for smaller centers. With the exception of the large-scale projects in Hinton, Wetaskiwin and Grande-Prairie, most of the projects are small and create few jobs.

There are very few boil water advisories in Alberta. Whether this can be attributed to tight-lipped policies or good water management is difficult to ascertain due to the lack of transparency.

Known issues in Alberta center around the oil sands contamination/overuse of water and the increasing threat of water shortage and groundwater contamination/depletion exacerbated by changing climate in the southern part of the province.

There are 12 water/wastewater projects in Alberta estimated at $13.7 M with a job creating potential of 166.

   YUKON

Four of the water/wastewater projects in Yukon are substantial and involve basic water services in Whitehorse. In recent years, the province has been making great strides to regulate and monitor its water, but many are still receiving this water by truck.

Impending issues in Yukon have everything to do with the warming of the North, rising sea levels and their effect on groundwater and permafrost. Accrding to
Environment Canada sea levels are expected to rise up to 50 cm on the north Yukon coast by 2050 (this date has been recently revised to 2012 by the IPCC), mainly due to warmer ocean temperatures. This could cause increased sedimentation, coastal flooding, and permanent inundation of some natural ecosystems, and place low-lying homes, docks, and port facilities at risk.

There are 8 water/wastewater projects in Yukon evaluated at 18.3 M with a job creation potential of 247.
