The North Revisited

Our initial interest in the North was spurred by the rapidly melting Arctic ice and the forseeable opening of the Northwest Passage. With major countries, including Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States, jockeying for position, to secure a piece of the arctic pie, Canada's North is the new frontier.
Exploring the North's mines and fuel resources is frought with alarming issues not the least of which is the risk of contaminating the Arctic's ocean, its land and its native culture. On the ground, little has changed in the last six months. As Northerners whiled away the long dark winter months, the arctic ice melted ever more rapidly and politicians met in an attempt to seal the fate of the new frontier.

Since the mine that justified its existence closed in 2002, the town of Nanisivik has been dismantled leaving behing a dock, some port buildings and the little town of Arctic Bay, population 770, 30 km away. In August 2007, Prime Minister Harper announced the building of a deep sea port in Nanisivik.

Prince Rupert is the land, air, and water transportation hub of British Columbia's North Coast, and home to some 12,815 people. It is the only Canadian Northern Port to have seen some development over the last six months, although it has not caught up with the hopes and expectations of the residents or of the head of the Port Authority. Recent economic woes in the U.S. and increasing environmental opposition to the construction of planned pipelines to Prince Rupert are dampening local spirits.
