Simcoe County Dump Site 41

According to the Council of Canadians, dump Site 41 sits immediately atop the pristine Alliston Aquifer - an essential source of fresh water for farms, people, communities, and nature reserves which drains into Georgian Bay. The preservation of the aquifer is important since it is used as a primary water source by numerous municipalities and also discharges into creeks and rivers which eventually flow into Georgian Bay, Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog and Lake Ontario.

The county of Simcoe maintains that the site selection, development and approval process has taken 30 years and that all necessary approvals are in place for the development of the North Simcoe Landfill (NSL).

On July 22, 2009, Simcoe County filed a motion for an injunction against the peaceful blockade of Site 41. Since then, the Ontario Provincial Police has charged eight people with mischief in connection with protests over the dump.

The Council of Canadians, First Nations and Simcoe County community members are calling for a one-year moratorium. The Council has also filed an injunction to stop development of the landfill site.
